Product Overview

The TDP-02 is an automatic foam edge trimming and cross cutting machine designed to finish foam sheet directly on a production line. It trims both side edges to a clean, parallel width and cross-cuts the sheet to the required length in one station, replacing two separate offline operations and the manual handling between them. Cutting width is adjustable from 1000 to 2000 mm, thickness from 1 to 100 mm, and line speed from 1 to 20 m/min.

Its main advantage is continuous operation. The machine can be installed directly behind a laminator or a cutting machine and run without stopping the line during trimming. The foam sheet enters from the upstream process, the side edges are trimmed, the sheet is cross-cut to length, and the trimmed scrap is wound onto a spool for storage or reuse. That makes it a natural finishing station for plants that produce laminated foam sheet, packaging foam or automotive interior foam in continuous form.

The TDP-02 handles the common flexible and semi-flexible foam families: PU sponge, EVA, PE, EPE and XPE, across a density range of 15–200 kg/m³. The cutting head is driven by a 10 kW motor, the machine weighs 5000 kg, and the overall footprint is 6424×4600×2786 mm.

The machine is aimed at foam packaging producers, furniture and mattress factories, composite foam lines and automotive interior suppliers. Where a plant currently trims edges on a separate saw or by hand and then cuts lengths on another machine, the TDP-02 consolidates the two steps, reduces handling damage and produces a more consistent finished sheet.

What Edge Trimming and Cross Cutting Do

Foam sheet coming off a laminator or a peeling line rarely has clean, parallel edges. The edges may be ragged, slightly wavy or wider than the customer specification, and the sheet still has to be cut to a fixed length before packing. The TDP-02 solves both issues in one pass: two side trimming blades establish the finished width, and a cross cutting head separates the sheet at the set length.

The trimming station removes a narrow strip from each edge. The width is set by moving the trimming heads to the required dimension, and the cut is clean enough that the sheet can go directly to printing, lamination or packing without a second finishing step. The cross cutting station then cuts the moving sheet to length, either on the fly or at a controlled stop depending on the line configuration.

The trimmed scrap is not dropped on the floor. It is guided to a winding unit and wound onto a spool, which keeps the work area clean and makes the scrap easy to store, sell or feed back into certain recycling processes. For a plant running continuous production, this alone removes a significant housekeeping burden and improves material accountability.

Machine Structure and Key Components

The machine is built on a rigid frame sized to span a 1000–2000 mm working width, with the trimming and cross cutting stations arranged along the line. At 5000 kg and 6424×4600×2786 mm, the structure is designed to stay stable while the sheet is moving at production speed.

  • Side trimming heads — two adjustable blade units that establish the finished width and produce a clean parallel edge.
  • Cross cutting head — cuts the moving sheet to the set length, integrated with the line speed so the length stays consistent.
  • Width adjustment — the trimming heads move across the 1000–2000 mm range to suit different product widths.
  • Scrap winding unit — collects the trimmed edge strips on a spool for storage or reuse.
  • Drive and control system — coordinates the trimming, cross cutting and winding speeds with the upstream line; 10 kW total motor power.
  • Safety guarding and interlocks — blade areas are guarded, and the drives stop when a guard is opened.
Key Selling Points
  • Two operations in one station — edge trimming and cross cutting are combined, so the sheet is handled once instead of twice.
  • Continuous in-line operation — can be installed behind a laminator or cutting machine and run without stopping the line during cutting.
  • 1000–2000 mm adjustable width — covers a wide range of packaging, mattress and automotive sheet widths.
  • 1–100 mm thickness range — handles thin packaging foam through thick laminated panels.
  • 15–200 kg/m³ density range — works across soft PU, EPE, PE, EVA and XPE grades.
  • Scrap winding and recovery — trimmed edges are wound neatly instead of becoming floor waste.
  • Stable finished width and length — reduces rejects and rework at the packing station.

Continuous In-Line Operation

The value of an in-line machine is measured by how little it disturbs the process around it. The TDP-02 is designed to sit behind a laminator or a cutting machine and match the line speed, so the sheet does not have to be accumulated, stacked or transported between steps. Trimming and cross cutting happen while the line is running, and the finished sheet leaves the station ready for packing or the next process.

Matching speeds is the key setup task. The trimming and cross cutting drives are coordinated with the upstream line so that the cut length stays constant even when the line speed changes. If the line runs faster than the finishing station can handle, the sheet will bunch; if it runs slower, the cut length will drift. The operator sets the relationship once for each product and records it, and the control system maintains it during the run.

For plants that cannot run fully in line, the machine can also be operated as a stand-alone finishing station with an infeed table. In that mode the sheet is fed manually or from a roll, trimmed and cross-cut, and stacked at the outfeed. This makes the same machine useful for both continuous production and smaller custom orders.

Cutting Width, Thickness and Density Range

The 1000–2000 mm width range covers the majority of packaging, furniture and automotive sheet products. Setting the width is mechanical: the trimming heads are moved to the target dimension and locked, and a sample is checked before the run starts. The 1–100 mm thickness range means the same station can finish a thin EPE packaging sheet and a thick laminated PU panel, provided the blade and feed settings are adjusted for the material.

Density affects the cut more than thickness does. A 15 kg/m³ soft foam needs a sharp blade and a lower feed force so it does not compress or tear; a 200 kg/m³ dense foam needs more rigidity and a slightly different blade angle. The TDP-02 covers the full 15–200 kg/m³ range, but the operator should record the settings for each grade rather than assuming one setup fits all materials.

The finished width tolerance depends on blade condition, edge guidance and sheet tension. A worn blade or a loose edge guide will produce a wavy edge even if the width setting is correct, so daily checks of blade and guides are part of normal operation.

Material Compatibility
  • PU sponge — furniture, mattress and packaging sheet; the most common material for this machine.
  • EVA — shoe, sports and tool-inlay sheet, where a clean edge is important for downstream bonding.
  • PE foam — protective packaging and construction sheet.
  • EPE pearl cotton — thin protective sheet and laminated packaging products.
  • XPE — cross-linked PE sheet for packaging and automotive applications.

The machine is intended for flexible and semi-flexible foam sheet within the stated density range. It is not designed for rigid foam, foam with hard inclusions or abrasive fillers, or sheet that cannot be guided flat through the station. Our technical team will confirm the material and thickness before an order is placed.

Primary Applications

Foam packaging industry. Edge finishing for EPE and XPE protective foam sheets, where a clean parallel edge is needed before printing, laminating or die cutting. The combined trimming and cross cutting replaces two offline steps and reduces handling damage.

Furniture and mattresses. PU sponge edge trimming for continuous foam sheet production. Consistent width and length make the sheet easier to stack, wrap and feed into the next process.

Composite production lines. Matching equipment after foam laminating machines. The TDP-02 can run in line with the laminator, trimming the edges and cutting the panels to length without stopping the line.

Automotive foam. Finishing cutting for interior foam sheets, including seat padding and trim components where a clean edge and stable length are required for assembly.

Position in the Production Line

The TDP-02 sits at the finishing end of a foam sheet line. Upstream, it receives sheet from a laminator, a peeling machine or a cutting machine. Downstream, the finished sheet goes to printing, die cutting, packing or assembly. Because it can run in line, the ideal layout places it directly after the laminator, with a short accumulation loop before and after to absorb speed variations.

The upstream sheet should be flat and under consistent tension. If the sheet wanders or is unevenly wound, the trimmed width will vary even with a correct setting. A guide roller or edge sensor before the trimming station helps keep the sheet aligned. We can review the complete line layout with the buyer and recommend the infeed, outfeed and accumulation arrangement before shipment.

Scrap Winding and Material Recovery

Edge trim is a continuous narrow strip, and if it is allowed to fall freely it becomes tangled, occupies floor space and creates a slip hazard. The TDP-02 routes the trimmed strips to a winding unit, where they are collected on a spool. The spool can be removed and stored, sold as scrap or, in some plants, fed back into a recycling process.

Winding tension matters. If the spool pulls too hard, it can affect the trimmed width; if it pulls too little, the strip will not wind neatly. The winding speed is therefore coordinated with the line speed. Operators should check the spool at the start of each shift and change it before it is full, so the line does not have to stop mid-run.

Comparison with Offline Trimming and Manual Cutting
  • Versus separate trimming and cutting machines: one station, one pass and one handling step instead of two, with less risk of edge damage between processes.
  • Versus manual trimming: consistent width and length, higher output and far less dependence on operator skill; no repeated measuring and marking.
  • Versus a saw: cleaner edge on soft foam, no dust and no tearing; the blade cuts rather than tears the cells.
  • Versus a die press: no die cost and no per-length tooling; the length is a setting rather than a die.
Safety, Operation and Training

Trimming and cross cutting blades are guarded, and the guards are interlocked so the drives stop when a guard is opened. Emergency stops are placed at the operator position and at the outfeed. Blade changes and width adjustments are carried out with the drives isolated and with cut-resistant gloves. Because the machine can run in line with other equipment, the emergency stop circuit should be coordinated with the upstream line so a stop does not create a sheet pile-up.

Operation is learned quickly. A new operator typically needs one to two days to set the width, set the cut length, match the line speed and run a first article. The main skills are checking the trimmed edge, checking the cut length and keeping the scrap spool under control. Training at installation, a printed operation manual and remote support are included.

Installation, Maintenance and Spare Parts
  • Foundation: a level, reinforced concrete floor able to carry the 5000 kg machine; anchor points are supplied.
  • Power: a dedicated supply matching the 10 kW connected load, with correct earthing and stable voltage.
  • Layout: the 6424×4600×2786 mm footprint must allow infeed and outfeed clearance and access to both blade stations.
  • Daily checks: blade condition, edge guides, guard interlocks, scrap spool and emergency stop.
  • Weekly checks: drive belt tension, guide alignment, lubrication points and electrical connections.
  • Spares: trimming blades, cross cut blades, edge guides, drive belts and proximity sensors are the usual consumables; we keep these available for repeat buyers.

Blade life depends on foam density and filler content. A dull blade shows up as a ragged edge or a higher feed force, and it should be re-sharpened or replaced before the finished width starts to drift. Edge guide wear is the second item to watch, because a worn guide allows the sheet to wander and produces a wavy edge.

Quality Control, Packaging and Shipping

Each machine is assembled, wired and run before shipment. The test report covers width adjustment through the full range, cross cut length consistency, line speed matching, guard interlocks, emergency stop and a sample trim and cut measured against the specification. The buyer receives the inspection record with the machine.

The machine is shipped in export-grade packaging with the frame protected against moisture, the blade stations secured, and loose parts boxed and labelled. Packaging details are confirmed with the buyer before dispatch. Delivery is 45 working days after downpayment, and payment terms are T/T or L/C.

Selecting the Right Configuration

The TDP-02 is the right choice when the product is continuous foam sheet that needs both edge trimming and length cutting, especially when the line runs a laminator or a cutting machine upstream. It is not the right machine for rigid foam, for batch cutting of small 3D parts, or for sheet outside the 1000–2000 mm width and 1–100 mm thickness range. Buyers should confirm the sheet width and thickness, the density range, the line speed, the required cut length accuracy and the available space and power. Sharing those details lets us confirm the configuration and the blade specification before the order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can it really run in line with our laminator without stopping the line?

A: Yes. The trimming and cross cutting drives are coordinated with the upstream line speed, so the sheet is trimmed and cut while the line is running. We confirm the interface and speed range with your line before shipment.

Q: What is the difference between this machine and a normal foam cutting machine?

A: The TDP-02 is a finishing station. It trims the two side edges to a parallel width and cross-cuts the sheet to length in one pass. It is not a contour cutter and does not produce 3D shapes.

Q: What width and thickness can it handle?

A: Cutting width is adjustable from 1000 to 2000 mm, and cutting thickness from 1 to 100 mm. Density range is 15–200 kg/m³. If your product is outside these ranges, tell us the actual dimensions and we will advise.

Q: How is the cut length controlled?

A: The cross cutting head is synchronized with the line speed, and the length is set on the control system. Once the relationship is set for a product, it is maintained during the run. A sample should be measured at the start of each order.

Q: What happens to the trimmed edge strips?

A: They are routed to a winding unit and collected on a spool. This keeps the floor clean and makes the scrap easy to store, sell or recycle. The spool should be changed before it is full to avoid stopping the line.

Q: Does it work with EPE, XPE, EVA and PE as well as PU?

A: Yes, the machine covers PU sponge, EVA, PE, EPE and XPE within the stated density range. Very soft or very dense grades need different blade and feed settings, which we provide as starting parameters.
