Servo PLC Automatic Vertical Foam Cutting Machine Cuts 2000x2000x1250 mm PU Blocks with 2-1250 mm Thickness
The TDP-4LS is an automatic vertical foam cutting machine that turns large PU foam blocks into slices, strips and rectangular blanks under servo and PLC control. The block is clamped between platform baffles, the cutting frame travels back and forth on linear guide rails, and the cutting width is set by the position of the movable baffle rather than by the operator's eye.
The working envelope is built around standard block sizes used in furniture, mattress and packaging production: an internal table of 2300×2400 mm, an external table of 2400×2400 mm and a maximum cutting size of 2000×2000×1250 mm. Cutting thickness can be set anywhere from 2 mm to 1250 mm on the same machine, so thin facing sheets and full-height block sections can be prepared in one shift.
Gross power is 6.08 kW and machine weight is 2500 kg. For a table of this size that is a light electrical demand and a stable base, which keeps installation simple and running cost low for a converter moving from hand-fed vertical cutting to a repeatable process.
The machine is aimed at foam converters, sofa and mattress plants, packaging workshops and deep-processing units that cut the same widths every day. The value is not speed alone: it is that the width entered on the panel is the width of the next block, the next shift and the next operator.
A normal cycle is short and follows six steps, with the operator active only at the start and at the end.
In a plant cutting several widths per day, step three is where the time is saved. On a manual cutter a new width means moving a fence, measuring with a tape and running a trial piece. On the TDP-4LS the value on the panel sets both the baffle position and the frame stroke, and the block stays where it was loaded.
Three functional groups carry the work: the fixed worktable with side baffles, the cutting frame on linear guides, and the servo plus PLC control system. Each group answers a different part of the cutting problem.
The mechanical logic is worth explaining to a buyer. On a swing-arm vertical cutter the blade path is an arc, and the further the cut sits from the pivot, the more that arc shows as a curved face. A frame on linear rails travels in a straight line, so the face stays flat over the full 2000 mm length of the block.
The second mechanical detail is the clamping. Because both sides of the block are held, the material cannot be pushed away by the blade, which is the usual reason a tall block ends up with a wedge-shaped face at the bottom of the cut.
The movable baffle is positioned from the control panel, so the block is neither moved nor re-measured between two widths.
Servo motors drive the movement, so speed changes are smooth and the same setting repeats on the next block.
The PLC stores width and speed, runs the reciprocating stroke and ends the cycle from the panel without manual intervention.
Automation on this machine is not a marketing layer over a manual design. It changes who can run the machine. A new operator enters two values and starts the cycle; the skill that a manual cutter demands — judging the width by eye and holding the block steady — is replaced by a setting on the panel.
It also changes what the batch looks like. On a hand-fed machine the width drifts through a shift as the fence is knocked and the operator gets tired. With the baffle positioned from the panel and the frame stroke tied to that value, the first piece and the last piece of the order share the same dimension.
The cut face is what the next process sees. If the face carries chatter marks, the marks show through fabric after upholstery and through film after lamination, and the part has to be trimmed or rejected.
Three things affect that face on a vertical cutter: the straightness of the blade path, the rigidity of the frame, and the stability of the block. The TDP-4LS addresses all three — rails instead of an arc, a reciprocating frame that does not flex at the end of the stroke, and baffles that hold the block on both sides.
Speed is the fourth factor, and it is under the operator's control. Soft low-density foam compresses under the blade and needs a slower feed to keep a square edge; tall blocks close to the 1250 mm limit also benefit from a moderate speed, because a fast stroke lets the blade deflect in the middle of the cut. Dense PU can be run faster without losing the face.
For thin slices the frame stroke is shortened and the baffle is brought close to the blade, which keeps the blade supported over a short travel. That is why the same machine can produce a 2 mm facing sheet and a 1250 mm block section, although the two jobs are set up differently.

The internal table is the working area where the block is clamped; the external table carries the overhang of a long block and gives the operator room to handle the finished piece. The maximum cutting size is the maximum block that can be processed in a single pass.
A range of 2–1250 mm is unusually wide for one vertical machine, and it is what lets a converter keep several product lines on a single table.
Used as facing sheets, quilt layers, packaging pads and lining material. The setting is a short frame stroke, a slow feed and a sharp blade. Very low density foam compresses easily, so the first piece of each block should be checked before the speed is raised.
The normal working range for sofa cushions, seat pads, armrests, mattress layers and packaging inserts. Width is set on the panel, the block stays clamped, and the stroke runs at a moderate speed matched to the density.
Full-height pieces for mattress cores and block splitting, where the frame runs a long stroke and the clamp holds the block against the blade pressure. At this height the blade tension and the block seating decide the face quality more than the speed setting does.
If the main product is continuous thin sheeting in long rolls, a horizontal skiving machine is a better match; the TDP-4LS works at its strongest where the width varies and the work is cut from block to piece. That distinction is covered in the selection section below.
The machine is built for flexible PU foam in the densities used in furniture, mattress and packaging production, and it handles EVA, PE and EPE foam in block form as well.
The limit is shape, not material. The machine makes straight vertical cuts, so the output is square or rectangular blocks and strips. Curved or contoured parts need a CNC contour cutting machine, and the two machines are usually found side by side in the same workshop rather than as substitutes.
Three machine types are often compared during a purchase, and each one produces a different form of foam.
| Machine type | What it produces | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| TDP-4LS vertical foam cutter | Slices, strips and rectangular blanks cut vertically to a set width and thickness | The product is a block-shaped core, pad or insert and the width changes between orders |
| Horizontal skiving machine | Thin continuous sheets sliced from the height of a long block | The product is sheeting for lamination, quilting or roll goods |
| CNC contour cutting machine | Curved, profiled and 3D parts cut from a drawing | The shape cannot be produced with straight vertical cuts |
Within the vertical cutter family, the TDP-4LS sits above a hand-fed machine because of the servo drive, the PLC cycle control and the linear guide frame, and it is distinguished from a band saw vertical cutter by the clamping baffles and the long 2–1250 mm thickness range. A plant that already owns a contour cutter still finds work for this machine: straight cuts on a contour machine consume programming time and blade life for a job that needs neither.
A common line layout is: block foaming, curing, vertical cutting of cores and strips on the TDP-4LS, horizontal slicing of any sheet product, then lamination and final assembly. Keeping the vertical step on a dedicated machine protects the width accuracy of the core while the sheet line runs at its own speed.
The machine stands on 2500 kg with a footprint of 5000×2600×2500 mm, so four details should be confirmed before delivery.
The table layout and the discharge side can be matched to an existing line, and roller conveyor sections can be arranged. Sharing the workshop layout before production avoids a machine that fits the floor but not the material flow.
A layout drawing, a wiring diagram and an English operation manual are supplied with the machine. Commissioning support is provided remotely, and on-site installation with operator training can be arranged on request.
Installation follows four stages. The machine is positioned and levelled on the prepared floor; the electrical supply is connected and checked against the supplied diagram; the band knife is fitted, tensioned and tracked; and a trial block is cut to confirm that the width setting on the panel matches the finished piece. The trial cut is the step that turns a catalogue figure into a working setting for the customer's own foam grade.
Training covers loading position, baffle clamping, width and speed entry, the automatic cycle, and the daily blade and guide checks. Because the width is set from the panel, a new operator normally reaches saleable output within the first shift.
Safety on this machine comes from the working method rather than from an add-on guard. The block is clamped between baffles and the frame travels on rails, so the operator does not hold or guide foam while the blade is moving. Parameters are entered before the cycle starts, and the run ends from the panel at the end of the stroke.
Three rules cover the daily risk:
At the end of a shift the routine is to clear foam dust from the linear guides and the baffle tracks, confirm that nothing is left under the blade path, and switch off the supply. The stored width and speed values remain in the control system for the next shift, so a repeat order needs no re-setting.
Maintenance is short and mechanical, and it is built around four items:
Two failure points account for nearly all unplanned downtime on a machine of this type: band knife tension and tracking, and foam dust on the linear guides. A tension check at the start of each shift and daily cleaning of the rails prevent both.
Spare band knives and guide components can be shipped with the machine, so a worn part is replaced from stock instead of waiting for an import delivery. For a plant running a single vertical cutter, that decision is usually worth taking at order stage.
Every TDP-4LS is assembled, aligned and run before shipment. The cutting frame travel, the baffle movement and the panel settings are checked, and a sample foam block is cut to confirm the finished width and the quality of the cut face.
The electrical configuration is CE compliant for European and other export markets. Documentation supplied with the machine includes the layout drawing, the wiring diagram and the English operation manual, which is also the reference for the maintenance intervals above.
The main frame is shipped with rust-proof treatment and protective film. The control cabinet, servo components and small spare parts are packed in wooden cases, and the machine is loaded and secured for container transport.
Standard delivery is 45 working days after the down payment is confirmed, shipped from Qingdao port. Payment terms are T/T or L/C, minimum order quantity is one set, and supply ability is three sets per season. The price is quoted against the machine configuration, the destination port and the spare parts list, because those three items change the packing plan and the delivery date.
When asking for a quotation, the useful details are: foam type and density, block size, target slice width and thickness, required output per shift, and the destination port. With those five points, the table configuration, the band knife specification, the spare parts list and the delivery schedule can be confirmed in one reply.
A: No. It makes straight vertical cuts, so the output is square or rectangular blocks and strips. For curved profiles, a CNC contour cutting machine is the correct choice.
A: The movable side baffle is positioned from the control panel, so the block is neither moved nor re-measured. A width change takes seconds instead of the fixture re-setting a manual cutter needs.
A: The range starts at 2 mm, but thin slices need a slow feed and a sharp band knife. If the main product is continuous thin sheet, a horizontal skiving machine is the better match.
A: It cannot be cut in one pass. The maximum block size is 2000×2000×1250 mm, so taller blocks have to be split on a horizontal machine first.
A: The baffles hold the block so it cannot shift during the cut. Very soft foam may show slight compression at the contact faces, which is normally trimmed off. If edge quality is critical, reduce the clamping force and check the first block.
A: Yes. The block is clamped and the frame runs on rails, so nobody needs to hold or guide the foam. The operator sets the parameters and starts the cycle from the panel.
A: A level concrete floor able to carry 2500 kg, a 6.08 kW supply matched to your voltage and frequency, and clearance around the 5000×2600×2500 mm footprint.
